Finance...don't quit your job yet. Duh there is still that big project you have to complete or even start that is guaranteed to produce new income. Does the boss like ever show up?? Even though the cats away, and there is a lull in business, you should still work. Looks like there is new information in your field that you need to look up, research and at least be familiar with. It's important because it is going to involve something that you will shortly have to master and you can show off how much you know about the trends in your field, which could land you in a line up for a supervisory role.
